Retired Church Minister Killed at Home in Germiston; Suspect Arrested

Germiston – April 8, 2026

A 74-year-old retired church minister has been killed at his home in Germiston on Johannesburg’s East Rand, with police confirming that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The victim, identified as Danie Oosthuizen, was a former minister of the Dutch Reformed Church (NG Church) Primrose-Oos. According to police, he was found dead at his residence following what has been described as a violent altercation.

A suspect, understood to have been employed at the property, has been taken into custody. Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the motive.

Community in Shock

Oosthuizen had retired approximately five years ago after decades of service to his congregation. Community members and former congregants have described him as a dedicated and compassionate leader who played a significant role in the lives of many through his ministry.

“He was always willing to help and support others,” one former congregant said. “His passing has come as a shock to many who knew him.”

A neighbour reported hearing a disturbance at the property and later contacted authorities. At the time of the incident, Oosthuizen’s wife was not at home.

Investigation Underway

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that a murder case has been opened, and the investigation is being handled by the relevant units.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.

Broader Safety Concerns

The incident comes amid ongoing concerns about violent crime in South Africa. Police statistics have indicated high levels of serious crime across various regions, prompting continued calls for improved safety measures and community policing initiatives.

Authorities have urged members of the public to allow the legal process to take its course as investigations continue.

Family Requests Privacy

Oosthuizen is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. The family has requested privacy during this time. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the church in the coming days.
