Residents of Bruins Avenue and surrounding streets in the Roseville/Mayville area of Pretoria say they have endured months of ongoing disturbances linked to schoolchildren from the nearby Hillview High School.
According to multiple local homeowners, properties have been damaged, with walls reportedly broken and covered in graffiti. Some residents claim schoolchildren have threatened their dogs, while others describe disturbing public behaviour including schoolgirls being stripped in public areas and alleged sexual activity near a powerbox. These incidents have left long-time residents feeling unsafe in an area they once described as peaceful.
Police response has also come under criticism. One resident reported calling the police on 17 May and being informed that the local station had only one available vehicle. Loud music and large gatherings are said to occur every Sunday, often continuing late into the evening with noise levels persisting past 10pm. Residents state that no prior notices appear to have been issued for these events, and they feel their complaints are not being adequately addressed.
During school hours, some drivers claim groups of children walk in the road, forcing vehicles to manoeuvre around them. Business owners near the corner of Smook and Franzina in Mayville have also reported repeated incidents of shoplifting and theft allegedly involving youths from the area.
Additionally, concerns have been raised about unauthorised fireworks displays on Sunday nights near the school. Residents say these illegal pyrotechnics disturb the neighbourhood and question whether the school or organisers obtained the necessary permits.
Local homeowners are calling for stronger intervention from authorities, including increased visible policing, better enforcement of noise regulations, proper permit checks for public gatherings, and accountability for vandalism and theft.
Many residents feel the situation reflects broader challenges with school discipline, youth behaviour, and rapid response from law enforcement in the area. They are urging the school, local authorities, and police to take decisive action to restore peace and order in the community.
Some residents are now openly asking whether racial differences are playing a role in these incidents. Given that the majority of complaints are coming from white homeowners in a historically white suburb, while the school serves a predominantly black learner population, questions are being raised about whether this constitutes a pattern of black-on-white tension or violence. Others argue it may simply be a failure of discipline, parenting, and law enforcement that affects the wider community.
This story is based on public posts and statements from affected residents. Authorities and the school have not yet issued an official response to the specific complaints.
