Farm Attack Victim Dies Weeks After Shooting in Oos Driefontein near Fochville in Gauteng

LEEUPORT, Oos Driefontein near Fochville in Gauteng — An elderly farmer has died in hospital more than a month after he and his family were brutally attacked on their property in the Leeupoort area.

Danie Moolman succumbed to his injuries at Leratong Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment since the incident on March 24. According to reports from the Carletonville Herald, Moolman passed away just over a month after the attack.

During the assault, the elderly owner and his son were both shot, while Moolman's wife and daughter were also assaulted. The attackers fled the scene in the family's vehicle, which was recovered later the same evening along with some of the stolen goods.

The farm where the attack occurred is situated next to the Mpahla Village informal settlement. The incident followed just four days after another farm attack in the same vicinity, raising concerns about ongoing rural safety issues in the region.

No arrests have been publicly confirmed in connection with the Moolman family attack at the time of reporting. Limpopo police have not yet issued a detailed statement on the progress of the investigation.

Farm attacks continue to be a pressing concern in South Africa, particularly in provinces like Limpopo, where rural communities often feel vulnerable due to isolation and slow response times. Advocacy groups have repeatedly called for stronger rural safety strategies, including better policing and community partnerships.

The family of Danie Moolman has requested privacy as they mourn their loss and continue to recover from the trauma. Friends and community members have expressed condolences, with many highlighting the resilience required to farm in challenging conditions.

This tragedy underscores the human cost of crime in South Africa's agricultural heartlands, where families not only sustain food production but also bear the brunt of violent opportunism. Authorities are urged to prioritise such cases to restore confidence in rural security.
