BREAKING: Matlosana Council Evacuated Amid Escalating Unrest – General Workers’ Protest Adds Fuel to Service Delivery Fire Klerksdorp, North West – Tuesday, 31 March 2026

What started as community protests over chronic water shortages, sewage spills, potholed roads, and unreliable electricity has now merged with labour discontent, forcing the dramatic evacuation of the municipal council chambers.

BREAKING NEWS: The City of Matlosana council was evacuated on Tuesday, 31 March 2026, following a protest by alleged general workers whose contracts had expired. The demonstrators, reportedly frustrated over job security and recruitment processes, forced officials and councillors to flee the premises for safety.

This latest incident comes just one day after interviews for general worker posts at the Klerksdorp Museum were disrupted and halted, highlighting ongoing tensions around municipal hiring practices.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Matlosana has strongly criticised today’s developments, describing them as “disgruntled cadre deployment” fallout. The party accuses the ANC-led administration of prioritising politically connected individuals over fair and transparent recruitment, further eroding public trust in the municipality.

Situation on the Ground

  • Road blockades persist: Major routes including sections of the N12, R503 (linking Klerksdorp to Hartbeesfontein), Vaal Reefs Road, and roads around Orkney and Stilfontein remain disrupted. Thick smoke from burning tyres continues to choke the air in townships such as Jouberton, Kanana, and Khuma.

  • Clashes and disruptions: Police have deployed rubber bullets and tear gas in response to stone-throwing in some hotspots. Commuters, school learners, and businesses are bearing the brunt, with many operations grinding to a halt.

  • Broader grievances: Residents are demanding urgent fixes for contaminated water, uncollected refuse, and crumbling infrastructure. Youth unemployment remains sky-high in this former mining hub, where job losses in the sector have compounded long-standing service delivery failures.

A resident in Stilfontein summed up the mood: “We are tired of empty promises. Contracts expire, jobs are given to connected people, and still nothing works. Today the council ran away – that shows how bad things have become.”

Political Fallout and Official Response

Factional battles within the ANC have long paralysed governance in Matlosana, with allegations of maladministration, irregular expenditure, and poor financial controls repeatedly flagged. The province has acknowledged the municipality’s decay and placed it under closer scrutiny, with talks of possible intervention.

Mayor Fikile Mahlophe and provincial authorities are holding urgent meetings, including attempts to engage taxi operators (whose recent shutdown added to the chaos) and now the protesting workers. SAPS has urged calm and warned that unlawful actions will not be tolerated, while promising to monitor hotspots closely.

The DA’s statement frames the council evacuation as symptomatic of deeper rot: years of cadre deployment allegedly undermining professional administration and fuelling worker discontent when contracts lapse or recruitment appears skewed.

What’s Next?

Community leaders have called a mass meeting in Jouberton this evening, with fears of further marches and disruptions tomorrow. As Premier Lazarus Mokgosi’s administration pushes its “Year of Decisive Action to Fix Local Government,” Matlosana has become a critical test case.

Will today’s evacuation and the merging of labour and community protests force meaningful intervention and accountability, or will it follow the all-too-familiar pattern of temporary calm after disruption?

This story is developing rapidly. Road users are advised to seek alternative routes and stay informed via local traffic updates. Authorities urge all parties to resolve grievances through dialogue rather than violence.

We will continue to monitor and update as events unfold in the City of Matlosana. Stay safe.
