Hands Off Malema”: Radical Left Activists Protest in New York as EFF Leader Julius Malema Faces 5 Years in Prison for Firearm Charges

New York / Johannesburg – April 20, 2026 – A small group of far-left activists gathered in Manhattan on Sunday for a vocal demonstration under the banner “Hands Off Malema”, in direct response to the sentencing of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema to an effective five years in prison.

The protest took place outside the South African Consulate-General, a frequent site for international ideological campaigns. According to reports, the demonstrators — linked to fringe organisations such as the Partisan Defense Committee, Spartacist League, and Internationalist Group — are known for their extreme ideological positions.

Malema was sentenced last week by the KuGompo Magistrates’ Court (formerly East London) on multiple firearm-related charges stemming from a 2018 EFF rally in Mdantsane. He was convicted of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as discharging a firearm in a public place. His legal team has secured leave to appeal the conviction and sentence.

Internationalising a Local Court Case

Protesters went as far as attempting to drag US President Donald Trump into the South African legal matter, reflecting a growing trend of politicising domestic court processes and seeking foreign intervention when outcomes do not suit radical narratives.

President Trump has repeatedly drawn global attention to the precarious situation of white South Africans, particularly Afrikaner farmers, highlighting issues of farm attacks, racial discrimination, and threats to property rights. His administration launched a dedicated refugee admissions programme for Afrikaners and other racial minorities facing government-sponsored persecution, underscoring the severity of safety concerns in post-apartheid South Africa.

Malema’s Controversial Legacy: “Kill the Boer” and Divisive Rhetoric

Julius Malema remains one of South Africa’s most polarising figures. His repeated public chanting of the struggle song “Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer” has sparked international outrage and raised serious questions about the normalisation of incitement and hate speech in South African politics.

Critics argue that such rhetoric contributes to a climate of hostility toward white farmers and the broader Afrikaner community at a time when farm murders continue to make headlines.

RadioOrania.co.za, the community radio station serving the Afrikaner town of Orania, has closely monitored Malema’s statements and court cases, highlighting concerns over his inflammatory language and its potential impact on race relations and minority rights in South Africa. The platform has reported extensively on the firearm case and Malema’s history of controversial speeches.

Double Standards or Rule of Law?

While Malema’s supporters frame the sentencing as political persecution, many South Africans view it as a long-overdue enforcement of basic firearm laws — the same laws that ordinary citizens are expected to obey. The attempt by overseas activists to shield a high-profile politician from accountability has raised eyebrows, especially amid ongoing debates about selective outrage in South African politics.

Malema’s appeal process will now be closely watched, both locally and internationally. In the meantime, the “Hands Off Malema” protest in New York has once again placed South Africa’s deep racial and political divisions under the global spotlight.
